An anti-hero to me is similar to a hero, but struggles mentally and/or emotionally with himself or herself. They have the power to do great things, but often find themselves struggling to do the right thing. Yes, he or she has an inner strength that he or she can use to accomplish greater, complex goals, but they find themselves in awkward and troubling situations and can not always get out of them so smoothly. Often, the male or female character dies a dramatic, terrible death and is most likely remembered for his or her brave and noble acts. Anti-heroes have existed since the beginning of time, and continue to thrive in society today.

I believe a perfect example of anti-hero would be Joan of Arc. After sitting through classes of history and French, it finally clung to me that Joan of Arc is a true hero. It wasn't until Mythology that I realized that Joan of Arc is actually an ANTI-hero. She had many a flaw, including being ignored by fellow citizens for the fact that she heard voices, and was titled a "lunatic" or being called "insane". In fact, she (to herself) believed that she heard the word of God, and he called her to save France from intense ruling. Joan of Arc proves to be an anti-hero because yes, she did do mighty and brave acts, but she was flawed because of her gift.

I believe that Joan of Arc is a great example of an anti-hero because even though she had flaws and people thought she was crazy she still went ahead and tried to save France because she thought it was the right thing to do.

It is true that an anti-hero probably struggles with himself/herself at first because of the fact that what he/she is doing is not morally acceptable in society. However, anti-hero's do those things because they believe in them strong enough to continue on anyway.
